Lost her first 1/2 a tooth....
Tonight in the tub Sophie lost one of her caps. And no the tooth fairy does NOT visit for caps falling off. Just what I need right now....oh well. Luckily the dentist was able to fix it!

Shark Teeth....Oh ah ah
We have been waiting and waiting for Luke's teeth to get loose. I gave him 4 months and they weren't moving at all. His permanent teeth were completely grown in so I took him to the dentist to get them removed. He was freaking out so bad before we even got into the office and really bad on the chair. He got laughing gas...but that wasn't enough to calm him down. So the dentist had him close his eyes and talked to him the whole time while he gave him the shot. Luke couldn't believe he didn't feel it at all. The best part was when the doc said "hand me the needle nose pliers". Ha. But his teeth are out now. First 2 teeth lost by force just before turning 9. :)

Kids at the dentist
It's that time again. Some of the highlights from this cleaning: Sophie decided she would like to clean teeth when she grows up. Sophie tried to trade in her $10 bill for an extra coin from the dentist. She gave it to him twice and he finally just gave it back to me. She really wanted that extra little toy. Claire had 1 small cavity. Tayson and Luke both got cash for having no cavities and Luke put his hands down his pants while having his teeth cleaned ..... his happy place maybe????

The Dentist
Last week at my cleaning my dentist noticed that one of my old silver fillings had a crack in it so it was time to replace it. When he got in there it was quite a bit deeper than he thought - you could see the nerve. He put in a pulp cap then a new filling and off I went. Then several days later my tooth started hurting and I could taste blood in my mouth so I went back in. My bite was a tiny bit off which caused bruising, swelling, something got stuck in the space created from the swelling...it was a big mess. So he gave me a strong anti-inflammatory w/a mild steroid to get things back to normal. It was a 6 day prescription and by day 3 I wasn't feeling so hot. My gut hurt so bad I just wanted to lay in bed in fetal position and I was having hot flashes. Luckily George was in town so he told me to go off the pills since the side effects were so bad and my tooth wasn't hurting anymore so there was no need to finish it off. The next day my gut started to feel better but then I starting feeling anxious and felt like I was going to have a panic attack at the smallest things. I guess I now know that steroids are not in my future.
On a side note: this was the first time I've ever had them give me laughing gas - it seemed to help ease my mind during the work. But I felt a little loopy for a while after so I'm not sure if I'll do it again. I guess it depends on the amount of dental work I'm having done.

Sophie's Surgery
When I took Sophie to the dentist a few weeks ago he told me she had lots of damage to her teeth. 18 of her 19 teeth needed work (one still hasn't come in yet). So we scheduled her appointment at the hospital since she would need to be put under for 2 hours. Her appointment was scheduled for 9:30 am. She couldn't eat from midnight on and couldn't drink anything after 6:30 am. So she had nothing to eat since bedtime the night before around 8:00 pm. They were running behind end she didn't end up going in until noon. She kept asking the nurse if she could have a snack. The poor little thing was so hungry.
They came in and gave her something to help her before they took her into surgery so she wouldn't be afraid. She was hilarious. She is already such a silly little thing that with some funny drugs she was crazy. She was totally cracking us up. Her surgery went great. It took just over 2 hours and the dentist said everything went perfect. She has 4 porcelain crowns on her front teeth and on one of her molars she had a baby root canal done and now has a little silver tooth.
Heidi came to hang out with me for a bit while Todd was at Claire's
dad's & donuts. She brought a cute bag of toys for Sophie. With
some awesome Cinderella gloves. I love that she wore them in her
"carriage" on the way out to the car.

The Dentist
Recently I told the kids that if they were cavity free at the dentist they would get $20. This was a huge motivator for Tayson and he took this very seriously. I rarely have to bug him to brush his teeth now. I simply say "go brush your teeth" and he does. Plus $20 is way cheaper than paying for fillings. All 4 kids had dentist appointments so I went to the bank and got out cash for them. I let our dentist in on the deal and he was so great about making it a big deal for the kids. They were so excited to get their teeth checked and when the dentist announced they were cavity free I handed them their money. They loved it!! All of them were cavity free and they have been even more motivated to keep brushing and flossing since.

Tayson bought a skateboard with his money.
It was $19.99 so he had to borrow a couple of dollars from Luke to pay for his taxes

Luke bought a $4 ball a little bug thing, paid for part of Taysons and put the rest in his piggy bank.

And Sophie got to buy a new pair of sunglasses (I didn't give her $20).
She is showing me the peace sign
Showing me their smiles and cash

The Dentist
Before I write this post I have to say I love my dentist. He is GREAT and my kids really like him.
But no matter how great he is I dread going to the dentist. I would say I have a rather high pain tolerance. Have a baby without medication? No problem! I've done it 4 times and would do it again if I had any desire to be prego again (but that's not the subject of this post). However, when it comes to dental work knock me out, drug me up, do whatever it takes so that I don't feel a thing. Ohhh how I hate dental work! And I haven't even had that much since I was a kid.
Anyways, last week the boys got their teeth cleaned and checked. Sadly, this didn't go well. Luke had 4 cavities and Tayson had 1. So I got to take both boys to the dentist on Tuesday (Luke in the morning and Tayson in the afternoon). I sat in the chair watching them get shots and fillings and I just felt sick to my stomach. It was so hard to sit there watching my babies in that big chair going through something I dread so much. They were both troopers and didn't flinch or complain at all (like I said my dentist ROCKS) I was so proud of them. Then since I was so traumatized by being at the dentist I took them to the super target (pronounced tar jay) to pick out a toy. **side note: Luke wanted a light saber and I gave in...we now have 6 of them!!! **
Being a mom is so crazy sometimes. I can't believe how I get when I think something my hurt my kids. They weren't scared at all and I had butterflies the whole time.
Oh and did I mention I still have to take Luke back to get his last 2 fillings done next week?
